Artist Statement:
The Puaiohi is a small, critically endangered thrush that lives only in a very limited area on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Its name comes from the sound of the song the male sings at twilight. Introduced mammals, especially rats, are a major threat to this species. Rodent control and a captive breeding program have been helpful. Many captive-bred individuals have been released into the wild, increasing the population.
