I always like to have some kind of connection to the subject I'm painting, however distant. In the case with all these rare birds, it's difficult to have reference material in your back pocket. Luckily I had a friend that had just been down to Costa Rica, and for but a brief second on a jungle birding expedition, snapped a photo of the black-cheeked ant-tanager, and then it was gone. Little did it know it would be contributing to the conservation of it's own species, and (too) many others in peril.
