We’re excited and proud to host the first annual Artists for Conservation Festival atop Grouse Mountain. I would like to thank Artists for Conservation (AFC) for introducing us to their inspiring international community which includes some of the most talented and committed artists from around the world. I’m also personally proud to participate as Honorary Chair of the AFC Festival’s VIP Gala and Exhibit Preview.
Grouse Mountain offers more than 1.2 million visitors annually the chance to experience British Columbia’s world famous natural beauty. The Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife invites our guests to come face to face with some unique indigenous wildlife including Grizzly bears, timber wolves, golden eagles and more. We view ourselves as stewards of the land at Grouse Mountain and pride ourselves by living and working sustainably. Our sustainability journey is encapsulated in our “Blue Grouse” philosophy. Our recent construction of the Eye of the Wind, the world’s only wind turbine with 360 degree viewing pod, is an enduring symbol of our commitment to sustainability. While The Eye of the Wind generates a meaningful portion of Grouse Mountain’s annual energy needs, we hope that it stands as a symbol for the future of responsible caretaking of the land.
When we first explored the idea of becoming hosts to the Artists for Conservation Festival, it became clear that their vision matched Grouse Mountain’s values of celebrating nature’s beauty, sustainability, and supporting our local community. Most importantly, like AFC, Grouse Mountain is focused on supporting wildlife conservation and endangered species through our education and research programs. At Grouse Mountain’s Refuge for Endangered Wildlife we conduct valuable active research and public outreach through our Grizzly bear and timber wolf habitats, North American Hummingbird Monitoring Network and the Northern Spotted Owl captive breeding program.
Grouse Mountain prides itself on working with world-class partners, and AFC is one of these. The Artists for Conservation Festival is a unique and visionary concept, and has the potential to make profound and lasting impressions on thousands of youth and members of the general public. The centerpiece of the event is the art exhibit - an exquisite collection of original nature-inspired artwork by artists from around the world. It is an honour for us to be the premier exhibit venue for the AFC Festival. We’re also thrilled to collaborate with AFC through our “Adventures in Education” program, inspiring youth through this remarkable congregation of artists – each of them teachers in their own right.
I would like to extend my warmest welcome to the artists, patrons, youth, families, art appreciators and nature enthusiasts to this unique international event. We hope that you enjoy the Artists for Conservation Festival along with the many facilities and attractions that Grouse Mountain has to offer.
