This endangered beauty of the high forests of Peru attracted me as I wished to learn more about a species non-Australian, and the plumage lends itself beautifully to watercolour. The largest of the Tanagers, and noted for it's extraordinary golden plumage, with purple indigo in the feathers, the colours were irresistible. Inhabiting 'elfin treelike forest' encouraged me to create the dripping, private aspect of it's home, freely running water through the pigment - a joy to paint.
