The perfectly named Australian Painted Snipe was irresistible to paint as a subject, the colours within the plumage delightful to drop in, using gorgeous Tiger's Eye, through to mauves made with opera rose and pthalo blue and my favourite Indigo. Listed as endangered, this wetland wader has patchy distribution throughout Australian wetlands, which are themselves in danger from salinisation, damage by livestock and drainage. They prefer shallow water with vegetative shelter and nest on small island mounds or shallow scrapes, dining on invertebrates, molluscs, worms and the like.
